Ever wonder how MotorTrend’s famous trophy came to be?
For more than a half century now, automotive manufacturers who have claimed MotorTrend’s Car of the Year honor—and since 1979, 1999, 2016, and 2022, respectively, our Truck, SUV, Person, and Performance Vehicle of the Year awards—have been presented with our Golden Calipers trophy. After all these years, those trophies reside in corporate HQs from Detroit to Tokyo to Stuttgart to Seoul, making the Golden Calipers one of the auto industry’s most widely recognized acknowledgments of excellence and achievement.
Of course, no one who designs or engineers a new car, truck, or SUV in the 21st century uses a device whose basic concept dates back at least 2,600 years to accurately determine the outside diameter of machined parts. What’s more, some old-school automotive engineers from the pre-digital age—engineers who used slide rules and log tables and pencils and paper to create some of the world’s most famous vehicles—have suggested our trophy’s distinctively curved spring-joint calipers are the wrong type, more suited to woodwork than metalwork. (In case you wonder, firm-joint calipers—which means both arms pivot around a common top axis—enable the more precise measurement of outside diameters required by metal machinists compared to their woodworking colleagues.)
